Chapter 26
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּashshּe֤leg ׀ bּaqּa֗yitz vekamּata֥r bּaqּatzi֑yr kּe֤n lo'-na've֖h likesi֣yl kּabֽod׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

כַּשֶּׁ֤לֶג ׀ בַּקַּ֗יִץ וְכַמָּטָ֥ר בַּקָּצִ֑יר כֵּ֤ן לֹא־נָאוֶ֖ה לִכְסִ֣יל כָּבֽוֹד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּatzּipּ֣or la֭nud kּadּer֣or la'֑up kּe֥n qiֽlela֥t chi֝nּa֗m l l֣o taboֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

כַּצִּפּ֣וֹר לָ֭נוּד כַּדְּר֣וֹר לָע֑וּף כֵּ֥ן קִֽלְלַ֥ת חִ֝נָּ֗ם לא ל֣וֹ תָבֹֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsh֣ot la֭sּus me֣teg lacham֑or ve֝shshe֗bet lege֣v kּesiyliֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

שׁ֣וֹט לַ֭סּוּס מֶ֣תֶג לַחֲמ֑וֹר וְ֝שֵׁ֗בֶט לְגֵ֣ו כְּסִילִֽים׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּa֣'an kּe֭siyl kּe'iualetּ֑o pּeֽn-tּishsheveh-lּ֥o gam-'aֽtּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.

אַל־תַּ֣עַן כְּ֭סִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּ֑וֹ פֶּֽן־תִּשְׁוֶה־לּ֥וֹ גַם־אָֽתָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ane֣h ke֭siyl kּe'iualetּ֑o pּen-yiheye֖h chaka֣m bּe'eynaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

עֲנֵ֣ה כְ֭סִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּ֑וֹ פֶּן־יִהְיֶ֖ה חָכָ֣ם בְּעֵינָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): meqatzּe֣h ra֭gelayim chama֣s shshote֑h shshole֖cha dּebari֣ym bּeyad-kּesiֽyl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off the feet, and drinks damage.

מְקַצֶּ֣ה רַ֭גְלַיִם חָמָ֣ס שֹׁתֶ֑ה שֹׁלֵ֖חַ דְּבָרִ֣ים בְּיַד־כְּסִֽיל׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): dּaley֣u shsho֭qayim mipּisּe֑cha u֝mashsha֗l bּepi֣y kesiyliֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

דַּלְי֣וּ שֹׁ֭קַיִם מִפִּסֵּ֑חַ וּ֝מָשָׁ֗ל בְּפִ֣י כְסִילִֽים׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּitzer֣or 'e֭ben bּemaregּema֑h kּen-note֖n likesi֣yl kּabֽod׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As he that binds a stone in a sling, so is he that gives honour to a fool.

כִּצְר֣וֹר אֶ֭בֶן בְּמַרְגֵּמָ֑ה כֵּן־נוֹתֵ֖ן לִכְסִ֣יל כָּבֽוֹד׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): ch֭ocha 'ala֣h beyad-shshikּ֑or u֝mashsha֗l bּepi֣y kesiyliֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As a thorn goes up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

ח֭וֹחַ עָלָ֣ה בְיַד־שִׁכּ֑וֹר וּ֝מָשָׁ֗ל בְּפִ֣י כְסִילִֽים׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ra֥b mechֽoleֽl-kּo֑l veshsoke֥r kּe֝si֗yl veshsoke֥r 'oberiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The great God that formed all things both rewards the fool, and rewards transgressors.

רַ֥ב מְחֽוֹלֵֽל־כֹּ֑ל וְשֹׂכֵ֥ר כְּ֝סִ֗יל וְשֹׂכֵ֥ר עֹבְרִֽים׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּe֭keleb shsha֣b 'al-qe'֑o kּe֝si֗yl shshone֥h be'iualetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly.

כְּ֭כֶלֶב שָׁ֣ב עַל־קֵא֑וֹ כְּ֝סִ֗יל שׁוֹנֶ֥ה בְאִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ra'i֗yta 'i֭yshsh chaka֣m bּe'eyna֑yv tּiqeva֖h likesi֣yl mimּeֽnּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do you see a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

רָאִ֗יתָ אִ֭ישׁ חָכָ֣ם בְּעֵינָ֑יו תִּקְוָ֖ה לִכְסִ֣יל מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ama֣r 'a֭tzel shsha֣chal bּadּa֑reke 'a֝ri֗y bּe֣yn harechobֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The slothful man says, "There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets."

אָמַ֣ר עָ֭צֵל שַׁ֣חַל בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ אֲ֝רִ֗י בֵּ֣ין הָרְחֹבֽוֹת׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ha֭dּelet tּisּ֣ob 'al-tziyra֑hּ ve֝'atze֗l 'al-mitּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As the door turns upon its hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed.

הַ֭דֶּלֶת תִּסּ֣וֹב עַל־צִירָ֑הּ וְ֝עָצֵ֗ל עַל־מִטָּתֽוֹ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ta֘ma֤n 'atze֣l ya֭do bּatzּalּa֑chat ni֝le'a֗h laֽhashshiyba֥hּ 'el-pּiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The slothful hides his hand in his bosom; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth.

טָ֘מַ֤ן עָצֵ֣ל יָ֭דוֹ בַּצַּלָּ֑חַת נִ֝לְאָ֗ה לַֽהֲשִׁיבָ֥הּ אֶל־פִּֽיו׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): chaka֣m 'atze֣l bּe'eyna֑yv mi֝shshּibe'a֗h meshshi֣ybey taֽ'am׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

חָכָ֣ם עָצֵ֣ל בְּעֵינָ֑יו מִ֝שִּׁבְעָ֗ה מְשִׁ֣יבֵי טָֽעַם׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): machazi֥yq bּe'azeney-ka֑leb 'obe֥r mi֝te'abּe֗r 'al-ri֥yb lּoֽ'-lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that passes by, and meddles with strife belonging not to him, is like one that takes a dog by the ears.

מַחֲזִ֥יק בְּאָזְנֵי־כָ֑לֶב עֹבֵ֥ר מִ֝תְעַבֵּ֗ר עַל־רִ֥יב לֹּֽא־לֽוֹ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּeֽ֭mitelahelehּa hayּore֥h ziqּi֗ym chitzּi֥ym vamaֽvet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As a mad man who casts firebrands, arrows, and death,

כְּֽ֭מִתְלַהְלֵהַּ הַיֹּרֶ֥ה זִקִּ֗ים חִצִּ֥ים וָמָֽוֶת׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּeֽn-'i֭yshsh rimּa֣h 'et-re'e֑hu ve֝'ama֗r haֽlo'-meshsache֥q 'aֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So is the man that deceives his neighbour, and says, "Am not I in sport?"

כֵּֽן־אִ֭ישׁ רִמָּ֣ה אֶת־רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְ֝אָמַ֗ר הֲֽלֹא־מְשַׂחֵ֥ק אָֽנִי׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe'e֣pes 'e֭tziym tּikebּeh-'e֑shsh ube'e֥yn ni֝regּa֗n yishshetּo֥q madֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Where no wood is, there the fire goes out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases.

בְּאֶ֣פֶס עֵ֭צִים תִּכְבֶּה־אֵ֑שׁ וּבְאֵ֥ין נִ֝רְגָּ֗ן יִשְׁתֹּ֥ק מָדֽוֹן׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): pּecha֣m le֭gechaliym ve'etzi֣ym le'e֑shsh ve'i֥yshsh mdvnym mi֝deyani֗ym lecharechar-riֽyb׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

פֶּחָ֣ם לְ֭גֶחָלִים וְעֵצִ֣ים לְאֵ֑שׁ וְאִ֥ישׁ מדונים מִ֝דְיָנִ֗ים לְחַרְחַר־רִֽיב׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): dּibere֣y ni֭regּan kּemiֽtelahami֑ym ve֝he֗m yared֥u chaderey-baֽten׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

דִּבְרֵ֣י נִ֭רְגָּן כְּמִֽתְלַהֲמִ֑ים וְ֝הֵ֗ם יָרְד֥וּ חַדְרֵי־בָֽטֶן׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּe֣sep si֭ygiym metzupּe֣h 'al-cha֑reshs shsepata֖yim dּoleqi֣ym veleb-raֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

כֶּ֣סֶף סִ֭יגִים מְצֻפֶּ֣ה עַל־חָ֑רֶשׂ שְׂפָתַ֖יִם דֹּלְקִ֣ים וְלֶב־רָֽע׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): bshptv bּi֭shsepatayv yinּake֣r shsone֑ u֝beqirebּ֗o yashshi֥yt miremaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that hates dissembles with his lips, and lays up deceit within him;

בשפתו בִּ֭שְׂפָתָיו יִנָּכֵ֣ר שׂוֹנֵ֑א וּ֝בְקִרְבּ֗וֹ יָשִׁ֥ית מִרְמָֽה׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yechanּe֣n q֭olo 'al-tּaֽ'amen-bּ֑o kּi֤y shshe֖ba tּo'eb֣ot bּelibּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When he speaks fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

כִּֽי־יְחַנֵּ֣ן ק֭וֹלוֹ אַל־תַּֽאֲמֶן־בּ֑וֹ כִּ֤י שֶׁ֖בַע תּוֹעֵב֣וֹת בְּלִבּֽוֹ׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): tּikּasּe֣h shsi֭ne'ah bּemashshּa'֑on tּigּale֖h ra'at֣o beqahaֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shown before the whole congregation.

תִּכַּסֶּ֣ה שִׂ֭נְאָה בְּמַשָּׁא֑וֹן תִּגָּלֶ֖ה רָעָת֣וֹ בְקָהָֽל׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּoֽreh-shshּa֭chat bּa֣hּ yipּo֑l vego֥le֥l 'e֝ben 'ela֥yv tּashshֽub׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever digs a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolls a stone, it will return upon him.

כֹּֽרֶה־שַּׁ֭חַת בָּ֣הּ יִפֹּ֑ל וְגֹ֥לֵ֥ל אֶ֝בֶן אֵלָ֥יו תָּשֽׁוּב׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): leֽshshon-shshe֭qer yishsena֣ dakּa֑yv upe֥h cha֝la֗q ya'ashse֥h midecheֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth works ruin.

לְֽשׁוֹן־שֶׁ֭קֶר יִשְׂנָ֣א דַכָּ֑יו וּפֶ֥ה חָ֝לָ֗ק יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה מִדְחֶֽה׃
