Chapter 30

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּibere֤y ׀ 'ag֥ur bּin-yaqe֗h hamּa֫shsּa֥ ne'u֣m ha֭gּeber le'iֽytiy'e֑l le'i֖ytiy'e֣l ve'ukaֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke to Ithiel, even to Ithiel and Ucal,

דִּבְרֵ֤י ׀ אָג֥וּר בִּן־יָקֶ֗ה הַמַּ֫שָּׂ֥א נְאֻ֣ם הַ֭גֶּבֶר לְאִֽיתִיאֵ֑ל לְאִ֖יתִיאֵ֣ל וְאֻכָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y ba֣'ar 'anoki֣y me'i֑yshsh veloֽ'-biyna֖t 'ada֣m liֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.

כִּ֤י בַ֣עַר אָנֹכִ֣י מֵאִ֑ישׁ וְלֹֽא־בִינַ֖ת אָדָ֣ם לִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-lama֥detּiy chakema֑h veda֖'at qedoshshi֣ym 'edaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.

וְלֹֽא־לָמַ֥דְתִּי חָכְמָ֑ה וְדַ֖עַת קְדֹשִׁ֣ים אֵדָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mi֤y 'alaֽh-shshama֨yim ׀ vayּera֡d mi֤y 'aֽsap-r֨ucha ׀ bּechapena֡yv mi֤y tzaֽrar-ma֨yim ׀ bּashsּimela֗h mi֭y heqi֣ym kּal-'apesey-'a֑retz mah-shshּem֥o umaֽh-shshּem-bּe֝n֗o kּi֣y tedaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Who has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in His fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is His name, and what is His son's name, if you can tell?

מִ֤י עָלָֽה־שָׁמַ֨יִם ׀ וַיֵּרַ֡ד מִ֤י אָֽסַף־ר֨וּחַ ׀ בְּחָפְנָ֡יו מִ֤י צָֽרַר־מַ֨יִם ׀ בַּשִּׂמְלָ֗ה מִ֭י הֵקִ֣ים כָּל־אַפְסֵי־אָ֑רֶץ מַה־שְּׁמ֥וֹ וּמַֽה־שֶּׁם־בְּ֝נ֗וֹ כִּ֣י תֵדָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-'imera֣t 'el֣ohּa tzerupa֑h mage֥n h֝֗u laֽchosi֥ym bּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Every word of God is pure: He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.

כָּל־אִמְרַ֣ת אֱל֣וֹהַּ צְרוּפָ֑ה מָגֵ֥ן ה֝֗וּא לַֽחֹסִ֥ים בּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּ֥osepּe 'al-dּebara֑yv pּen-yoki֖ycha bּeka֣ venikezaֽbetּa׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Add you not to His words, lest He reprove you, and you be found a liar.

אַל־תּ֥וֹסְףְּ עַל־דְּבָרָ֑יו פֶּן־יוֹכִ֖יחַ בְּךָ֣ וְנִכְזָֽבְתָּ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshe֭tּayim shsha'a֣letּiy me'itּa֑ke 'al-tּimena֥ mi֝mּe֗nּiy bּete֣rem 'amֽut׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Two things have I required of You; deny me them not before I die:

שְׁ֭תַּיִם שָׁאַ֣לְתִּי מֵאִתָּ֑ךְ אַל־תִּמְנַ֥ע מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי בְּטֶ֣רֶם אָמֽוּת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsha֤ve ׀ uֽdebar-kּaza֡b hareche֬q mimּe֗nּiy re֣'shsh va֭'oshsher 'al-tּiֽtּen-li֑y ha֝teriype֗niy le֣chem chuqּiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

שָׁ֤וְא ׀ וּֽדְבַר־כָּזָ֡ב הַרְחֵ֬ק מִמֶּ֗נִּי רֵ֣אשׁ וָ֭עֹשֶׁר אַל־תִּֽתֶּן־לִ֑י הַ֝טְרִיפֵ֗נִי לֶ֣חֶם חֻקִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּe֥n 'eshsebּa֨ ׀ vekichashshetּiy֮ ve'ama֗retּiy mi֥y yeh֫va֥h upeֽn-'iuare֥shsh vegana֑betּiy ve֝tapa֗shsetּiy shshe֣m 'elohaֽy׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Lest I be full, and deny You, and say, "Who is the LORD?" or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

פֶּ֥ן אֶשְׂבַּ֨ע ׀ וְכִחַשְׁתִּי֮ וְאָמַ֗רְתִּי מִ֥י יְה֫וָ֥ה וּפֶֽן־אִוָּרֵ֥שׁ וְגָנַ֑בְתִּי וְ֝תָפַ֗שְׂתִּי שֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהָֽי׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּaleshshe֣n 'e֭bed 'el-'dnv 'adona֑yv pּeֽn-yeqalּeleka֥ ve'ashshaֽmetּa׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Accuse not a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.

אַל־תַּלְשֵׁ֣ן עֶ֭בֶד אֶל־אדנו אֲדֹנָ֑יו פֶּֽן־יְקַלֶּלְךָ֥ וְאָשָֽׁמְתָּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּ֭or 'abi֣yv yeqalּe֑l ve'et-'i֝mּ֗o lo֣ yebareֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

דּ֭וֹר אָבִ֣יו יְקַלֵּ֑ל וְאֶת־אִ֝מּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א יְבָרֵֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּ֭or tah֣or bּe'eyna֑yv u֝mitzּo'at֗o lo֣ ruchaֽtz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

דּ֭וֹר טָה֣וֹר בְּעֵינָ֑יו וּ֝מִצֹּאָת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רֻחָֽץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּ֭or mah-ram֣u 'eyna֑yv ve֝'ape'apּa֗yv yinּashseֽ'u׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

דּ֭וֹר מָה־רָמ֣וּ עֵינָ֑יו וְ֝עַפְעַפָּ֗יו יִנָּשֵֽׂאוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּ֤or ׀ charab֣ot shshinּayv֮ uֽma'akal֪ot meֽtalּe'o֫ta֥yv le'eko֣l 'aniyּi֣ym me'e֑retz ve֝'ebeyoni֗ym me'adaֽm׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

דּ֤וֹר ׀ חֲרָב֣וֹת שִׁנָּיו֮ וּֽמַאֲכָל֪וֹת מְֽתַלְּעֹ֫תָ֥יו לֶאֱכֹ֣ל עֲנִיִּ֣ים מֵאֶ֑רֶץ וְ֝אֶבְיוֹנִ֗ים מֵאָדָֽם׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): lֽa'aluqa֨h ׀ shshetּe֥y banot֮ ha֤b ׀ ha֥b shshal֣oshsh he֭nּah lo֣ tishsebּa֑'enah 'a֝rebּa֗ lo'-'a֥meru hֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The horseleach has two daughters, crying, "Give, give." There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things say not, "It is enough:"

לַֽעֲלוּקָ֨ה ׀ שְׁתֵּ֥י בָנוֹת֮ הַ֤ב ׀ הַ֥ב שָׁל֣וֹשׁ הֵ֭נָּה לֹ֣א תִשְׂבַּ֑עְנָה אַ֝רְבַּ֗ע לֹא־אָ֥מְרוּ הֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshe'ol֮ ve'o֪tze֫r ra֥cham 'e֭retz lo'-shsa֣be'ah mּa֑yim ve֝'e֗shsh lo'-'a֥merah hֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that says not, "It is enough."

שְׁאוֹל֮ וְעֹ֪צֶ֫ר רָ֥חַם אֶ֭רֶץ לֹא־שָׂ֣בְעָה מַּ֑יִם וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ לֹא־אָ֥מְרָה הֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֤yin ׀ tּiֽle'a֣g le'ab֮ vetab֪uz liֽyqּaha֫t-'e֥m yiqּer֥uha 'orebey-na֑chal veֽyo'kel֥uha beney-naֽshsher׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The eye that mocks at his father, and despises to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

עַ֤יִן ׀ תִּֽלְעַ֣ג לְאָב֮ וְתָב֪וּז לִֽיקֲּהַ֫ת־אֵ֥ם יִקְּר֥וּהָ עֹרְבֵי־נַ֑חַל וְֽיֹאכְל֥וּהָ בְנֵי־נָֽשֶׁר׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsheloshsha֣h he֭mּah nipele'֣u mimּe֑nּiy v'rb ve֝'arebּa'a֗h lo֣ yeda'etּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I know not:

שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה הֵ֭מָּה נִפְלְא֣וּ מִמֶּ֑נִּי וארבע וְ֝אַרְבָּעָ֗ה לֹ֣א יְדַעְתִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּe֤reke hanּe֨shsher ׀ bּashshּamayim֮ dּe֥reke nacha֗shsh 'ale֫y tz֥ur dּeֽreke-'oniyּa֥h beleb-ya֑m vede֖reke gּe֣ber bּe'alemaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.

דֶּ֤רֶךְ הַנֶּ֨שֶׁר ׀ בַּשָּׁמַיִם֮ דֶּ֥רֶךְ נָחָ֗שׁ עֲלֵ֫י צ֥וּר דֶּֽרֶךְ־אֳנִיָּ֥ה בְלֶב־יָ֑ם וְדֶ֖רֶךְ גֶּ֣בֶר בְּעַלְמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּe֤n ׀ dּe֥reke 'ishshּa֗h mena֫'a֥pet 'a֭kelah uma֣chatah pi֑yha ve֝'amera֗h loֽ'-pa'a֥letּiy 'aֽven׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, "I have done no wickedness."

כֵּ֤ן ׀ דֶּ֥רֶךְ אִשָּׁ֗ה מְנָ֫אָ֥פֶת אָ֭כְלָה וּמָ֣חֲתָה פִ֑יהָ וְ֝אָמְרָ֗ה לֹֽא־פָעַ֥לְתִּי אָֽוֶן׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּa֣chat shsha֭loshsh ra֣gezah 'e֑retz veta֥chat 'a֝rebּa֗ lo'-tuka֥l shse'eֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:

תַּ֣חַת שָׁ֭לוֹשׁ רָ֣גְזָה אֶ֑רֶץ וְתַ֥חַת אַ֝רְבַּ֗ע לֹא־תוּכַ֥ל שְׂאֵֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּaֽchat-'e֭bed kּi֣y yimel֑oke ve֝naba֗l kּi֣y yiֽshsebּaֽ'-laֽchem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For a servant when he reigns; and a fool when he is filled with meat;

תַּֽחַת־עֶ֭בֶד כִּ֣י יִמְל֑וֹךְ וְ֝נָבָ֗ל כִּ֣י יִֽשְׂבַּֽע־לָֽחֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּa֣chat shse֭nu'ah kּi֣y tibּa'e֑l ve֝shshipecha֗h kּiֽy-tiyra֥shsh gּebiretּaֽhּ׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

תַּ֣חַת שְׂ֭נוּאָה כִּ֣י תִבָּעֵ֑ל וְ֝שִׁפְחָ֗ה כִּֽי־תִירַ֥שׁ גְּבִרְתָּֽהּ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): arebּa֣'ah he֭m qetanּey-'a֑retz ve֝he֗mּah chakami֥ym mechukּamiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:

אַרְבָּ֣עָה הֵ֭ם קְטַנֵּי־אָ֑רֶץ וְ֝הֵ֗מָּה חֲכָמִ֥ים מְחֻכָּמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ha֭nּemaliym 'a֣m lo'-'a֑z vayּaki֖ynu baqּa֣yitz lachemaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;

הַ֭נְּמָלִים עַ֣ם לֹא־עָ֑ז וַיָּכִ֖ינוּ בַקַּ֣יִץ לַחְמָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshe֭panּiym 'a֣m lo'-'atz֑um vayּashsi֖ymu basּe֣la bּeytaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;

שְׁ֭פַנִּים עַ֣ם לֹא־עָצ֑וּם וַיָּשִׂ֖ימוּ בַסֶּ֣לַע בֵּיתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): me֭leke 'e֣yn la'arebּe֑h vayּetze֖ chotze֣tz kּulּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;

מֶ֭לֶךְ אֵ֣ין לָאַרְבֶּ֑ה וַיֵּצֵ֖א חֹצֵ֣ץ כֻּלּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shse֭mamiyt bּeyada֣yim tּetapּe֑shs ve֝hi֗y bּehe֣ykeley meֽleke׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The spider takes hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.

שְׂ֭מָמִית בְּיָדַ֣יִם תְּתַפֵּ֑שׂ וְ֝הִ֗יא בְּהֵ֣יכְלֵי מֶֽלֶךְ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsheloshsha֣h he֭mּah meyti֣ybey tza֑'ad ve֝'arebּa'a֗h meyti֥bey laֽket׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There be three things which go well, yes, four are comely in going:

שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה הֵ֭מָּה מֵיטִ֣יבֵי צָ֑עַד וְ֝אַרְבָּעָ֗ה מֵיטִ֥בֵי לָֽכֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): la֭yishsh gּibּ֣or bּabּehema֑h velo'-ya֝shsh֗ub mipּeney-koֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turns not away for any;

לַ֭יִשׁ גִּבּ֣וֹר בַּבְּהֵמָ֑ה וְלֹא־יָ֝שׁ֗וּב מִפְּנֵי־כֹֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): zarezi֣yr matena֣yim 'o-ta֑yishsh u֝me֗leke 'aleq֥um 'imּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.

זַרְזִ֣יר מָתְנַ֣יִם אוֹ־תָ֑יִשׁ וּ֝מֶ֗לֶךְ אַלְק֥וּם עִמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): im-naba֥letּa behitenashsּe֑ ve'im-za֝mּ֗ota ya֣d lepeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, lay your hand upon your mouth.

אִם־נָבַ֥לְתָּ בְהִתְנַשֵּׂ֑א וְאִם־זַ֝מּ֗וֹתָ יָ֣ד לְפֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y mi֪ytz chala֡b y֘otzi֤y cheme'a֗h uֽmiytz-'a֭p y֣otziy da֑m umi֥ytz 'a֝pּa֗yim y֣otziy riֽyb׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Surely the churning of milk brings forth butter, and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood: so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.

כִּ֤י מִ֪יץ חָלָ֡ב י֘וֹצִ֤יא חֶמְאָ֗ה וּֽמִיץ־אַ֭ף י֣וֹצִיא דָ֑ם וּמִ֥יץ אַ֝פַּ֗יִם י֣וֹצִיא רִֽיב׃פ
