Chapter 31

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּi֭berey lemu'e֣l me֑leke ma֝shsּa֗ 'aֽshsher-yisּera֥tּu 'imּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

דִּ֭בְרֵי לְמוּאֵ֣ל מֶ֑לֶךְ מַ֝שָּׂ֗א אֲֽשֶׁר־יִסְּרַ֥תּוּ אִמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mah-bּe֭riy umaֽh-bּar-bּiteni֑y u֝meh bּar-nedaraֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

מַה־בְּ֭רִי וּמַֽה־בַּר־בִּטְנִ֑י וּ֝מֶה בַּר־נְדָרָֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּitּe֣n lanּashshi֣ym cheyle֑ka u֝derake֗yka laֽmech֥ot melakiֽyn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Give not your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings.

אַל־תִּתֵּ֣ן לַנָּשִׁ֣ים חֵילֶ֑ךָ וּ֝דְרָכֶ֗יךָ לַֽמְח֥וֹת מְלָכִֽין׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֤l laֽmelaki֨ym ׀ leֽmo'e֗l 'a֣l laֽmelaki֣ym shsheto-ya֑yin u֝lerozeni֗ym 'v 'e֣y shshekaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

אַ֤ל לַֽמְלָכִ֨ים ׀ לְֽמוֹאֵ֗ל אַ֣ל לַֽמְלָכִ֣ים שְׁתוֹ־יָ֑יִן וּ֝לְרוֹזְנִ֗ים או אֵ֣י שֵׁכָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּen-yi֭shshetּeh veyishshekּa֣ch mechuqּa֑q viֽ֝yshshanּeh dּi֣yn kּal-bּeney-'oֽniy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgement of any of the afflicted.

פֶּן־יִ֭שְׁתֶּה וְיִשְׁכַּ֣ח מְחֻקָּ֑ק וִֽ֝ישַׁנֶּה דִּ֣ין כָּל־בְּנֵי־עֹֽנִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּenu-shsheka֣r le'obe֑d ve֝yayin lema֣rey naֽpeshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to those that be of heavy hearts.

תְּנוּ־שֵׁכָ֣ר לְאוֹבֵ֑ד וְ֝יַיִן לְמָ֣רֵי נָֽפֶשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yi֭shshetּeh veyishshekּa֣ch riyshsh֑o va֝'amal֗o lo֣ yizekּar-'ֽod׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

יִ֭שְׁתֶּה וְיִשְׁכַּ֣ח רִישׁ֑וֹ וַ֝עֲמָל֗וֹ לֹ֣א יִזְכָּר־עֽוֹד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּetach-pּi֥yka le'ilּe֑m 'el-dּi֝֗yn kּal-bּene֥y chalֽop׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Open your mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

פְּתַח־פִּ֥יךָ לְאִלֵּ֑ם אֶל־דִּ֝֗ין כָּל־בְּנֵ֥י חֲלֽוֹף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּetach-pּi֥yka shshepat-tze֑deq ve֝di֗yn 'ani֥y ve'ebeyֽon׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

פְּתַח־פִּ֥יךָ שְׁפָט־צֶ֑דֶק וְ֝דִ֗ין עָנִ֥י וְאֶבְיֽוֹן׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): eֽshshet-cha֭yil mi֣y yimetza֑ veracho֖q mipּeniyni֣ym mikeraֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Who can find a [1] virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

אֵֽשֶׁת־חַ֭יִל מִ֣י יִמְצָ֑א וְרָחֹ֖ק מִפְּנִינִ֣ים מִכְרָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּa֣tach bּa֭hּ le֣b bּa'ela֑hּ ve֝shshala֗l lo֣ yechesaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The heart of her husband does safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

בָּ֣טַח בָּ֭הּ לֵ֣ב בַּעְלָ֑הּ וְ֝שָׁלָ֗ל לֹ֣א יֶחְסָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּemala֣tehu t֣ob velo'-ra֑ kּo֝֗l yeme֣y chayּeֽyh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

גְּמָלַ֣תְהוּ ט֣וֹב וְלֹא־רָ֑ע כֹּ֝֗ל יְמֵ֣י חַיֶּֽיה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּa֭reshshah tze֣mer upishshetּi֑ym va֝tּa֗'ashs bּeche֣petz kּapּeֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She seeks wool, and flax, and works willingly with her hands.

דָּ֭רְשָׁה צֶ֣מֶר וּפִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַ֝תַּ֗עַשׂ בְּחֵ֣פֶץ כַּפֶּֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ha֭yetah kּa'oniyּ֣ot soche֑r mi֝mּerecha֗q tּabi֥y lachemaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She is like the merchants' ships; she brings her food from afar.

הָ֭יְתָה כָּאֳנִיּ֣וֹת סוֹחֵ֑ר מִ֝מֶּרְחָ֗ק תָּבִ֥יא לַחְמָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֤qam ׀ bּe'֬od la֗yelah vatּitּe֣n te֣rep lebeyta֑hּ ve֝cho֗q lena'aroteֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She rises also while it is yet night, and gives meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

וַתָּ֤קָם ׀ בְּע֬וֹד לַ֗יְלָה וַתִּתֵּ֣ן טֶ֣רֶף לְבֵיתָ֑הּ וְ֝חֹ֗ק לְנַעֲרֹתֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): zamema֣h shsa֭deh vatּiqּache֑hu mipּeri֥y ka֝pּe֗yha nt na֣te'ah kּaֽrem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She considers a field, and buys it: with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.

זָמְמָ֣ה שָׂ֭דֶה וַתִּקָּחֵ֑הוּ מִפְּרִ֥י כַ֝פֶּ֗יהָ נטע נָ֣טְעָה כָּֽרֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): chaֽgera֣h be'֣oz matene֑yha va֝tּe'amּe֗tz zero'oteֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She girds her loins with strength, and strengthens her arms.

חָֽגְרָ֣ה בְע֣וֹז מָתְנֶ֑יהָ וַ֝תְּאַמֵּ֗ץ זְרֹעוֹתֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ta֭'amah kּiy-t֣ob sachera֑hּ loֽ'-yikebּe֖h blyl balּa֣yelah neraֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She perceives that her merchandise is good: her lamp goes not out by night.

טָ֭עֲמָה כִּי־ט֣וֹב סַחְרָ֑הּ לֹֽא־יִכְבֶּ֖ה בליל בַלַּ֣יְלָה נֵרָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ya֭deyha shshilּecha֣h bakּiyshsh֑or ve֝kapּe֗yha tּa֣meku paֽleke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She lays her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

יָ֭דֶיהָ שִׁלְּחָ֣ה בַכִּישׁ֑וֹר וְ֝כַפֶּ֗יהָ תָּ֣מְכוּ פָֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa֭pּahּ pּareshsa֣h le'ani֑y ve֝yade֗yha shshilּecha֥h laֽ'ebeyֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She stretches out her hand to the poor; yes, she reaches forth her hands to the needy.

כַּ֭פָּהּ פָּרְשָׂ֣ה לֶעָנִ֑י וְ֝יָדֶ֗יהָ שִׁלְּחָ֥ה לָֽאֶבְיֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tiyra֣ lebeyta֣hּ mishshּa֑leg kּi֥y kal-bּe֝yta֗hּ labu֥shsh shshaniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

לֹא־תִירָ֣א לְבֵיתָ֣הּ מִשָּׁ֑לֶג כִּ֥י כָל־בֵּ֝יתָ֗הּ לָבֻ֥שׁ שָׁנִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): marebadּi֥ym 'aֽshsetah-lּa֑hּ shshe֖shsh ve'aregּama֣n lebushshaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She makes herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

מַרְבַדִּ֥ים עָֽשְׂתָה־לָּ֑הּ שֵׁ֖שׁ וְאַרְגָּמָ֣ן לְבוּשָֽׁהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): noda֣ bּashshּe'ari֣ym bּa'ela֑hּ bּe֝shshibetּ֗o 'im-ziqeney-'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.

נוֹדָ֣ע בַּשְּׁעָרִ֣ים בַּעְלָ֑הּ בְּ֝שִׁבְתּ֗וֹ עִם־זִקְנֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): sadi֣yn 'a֭shsetah vatּimekּo֑r va֝chag֗or natena֥h laֽkּena'aniֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She makes fine linen, and sells it; and delivers girdles to the merchant.

סָדִ֣ין עָ֭שְׂתָה וַתִּמְכֹּ֑ר וַ֝חֲג֗וֹר נָתְנָ֥ה לַֽכְּנַעֲנִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): oz-vehada֥r lebushsha֑hּ va֝tּishsecha֗q ley֣om 'acharֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

עֹז־וְהָדָ֥ר לְבוּשָׁ֑הּ וַ֝תִּשְׂחַ֗ק לְי֣וֹם אַחֲרֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּi֭yha pּatecha֣h bechakema֑h vetֽorat-che֝֗sed 'al-leshshonaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

פִּ֭יהָ פָּתְחָ֣ה בְחָכְמָ֑ה וְתֽוֹרַת־חֶ֝֗סֶד עַל־לְשׁוֹנָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tz֭opiyּah haliyk֣ot bּeyta֑hּ vele֥chem 'a֝tzel֗ut lo֣ to'keֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She looks well to the ways of her household, and eats not the bread of idleness.

צ֭וֹפִיָּה הֲלִיכ֣וֹת בֵּיתָ֑הּ וְלֶ֥חֶם עַ֝צְל֗וּת לֹ֣א תֹאכֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): qa֣mu ba֭neyha vaֽye'ashshּer֑uha bּa֝'ela֗hּ vaֽyehaֽlelahּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.

קָ֣מוּ בָ֭נֶיהָ וַֽיְאַשְּׁר֑וּהָ בַּ֝עְלָ֗הּ וַֽיְהַֽלְלָהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): rabּ֣ot bּa֭not 'a֣shsu cha֑yil ve֝'a֗tּe 'ali֥yt 'al-kּulּaֽnah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Many daughters have done virtuously, but you excel them all."

רַבּ֣וֹת בָּ֭נוֹת עָ֣שׂוּ חָ֑יִל וְ֝אַ֗תְּ עָלִ֥ית עַל־כֻּלָּֽנָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshe֣qer ha֭chen vehe֣bel hayּo֑piy 'ishshּa֥h yire'at-ye֝hva֗h hi֣y titehalּaֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

שֶׁ֣קֶר הַ֭חֵן וְהֶ֣בֶל הַיֹּ֑פִי אִשָּׁ֥ה יִרְאַת־יְ֝הוָ֗ה הִ֣יא תִתְהַלָּֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּenu-la֭hּ mipּeri֣y yade֑yha viֽyhalel֖uha bashshּe'ari֣ym ma'ashseֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

תְּנוּ־לָ֭הּ מִפְּרִ֣י יָדֶ֑יהָ וִֽיהַלְל֖וּהָ בַשְּׁעָרִ֣ים מַעֲשֶֽׂיהָ׃
