Chapter 7

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe֭niy shshemo֣r 'amara֑y u֝mitzevota֗y tּitzepּo֥n 'itּaֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you.

בְּ֭נִי שְׁמֹ֣ר אֲמָרָ֑י וּ֝מִצְוֺתַ֗י תִּצְפֹּ֥ן אִתָּֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshemo֣r mitzevota֣y vecheye֑h ve֝torati֗y kּe'iyshsh֥on 'eyneֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of your eye.

שְׁמֹ֣ר מִצְוֺתַ֣י וֶחְיֵ֑ה וְ֝תוֹרָתִ֗י כְּאִישׁ֥וֹן עֵינֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): qashshere֥m 'al-'etzebּe'ote֑yka kּa֝tebe֗m 'al-l֥ucha libּeֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Bind them upon your fingers, write them upon the table of your heart.

קָשְׁרֵ֥ם עַל־אֶצְבְּעֹתֶ֑יךָ כָּ֝תְבֵ֗ם עַל־ל֥וּחַ לִבֶּֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): emo֣r laֽ֭chakemah 'acho֣tiy 'a֑tּe u֝moda֗ labּiyna֥h tiqeraֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Say to wisdom, "You are my sister;" and call understanding your kinswoman:

אֱמֹ֣ר לַֽ֭חָכְמָה אֲחֹ֣תִי אָ֑תְּ וּ֝מֹדָ֗ע לַבִּינָ֥ה תִקְרָֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): li֭shshemareka me'ishshּa֣h zara֑h mi֝nּakeriyּa֗h 'amare֥yha hecheliֽyqah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)That they may keep you from the strange woman, from the stranger who flatters with her words.

לִ֭שְׁמָרְךָ מֵאִשָּׁ֣ה זָרָ֑ה מִ֝נָּכְרִיָּ֗ה אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ הֶחֱלִֽיקָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֭y bּechalּ֣on bּeyti֑y bּe'a֖d 'eshshenabּi֣y nishsheqaֽpetּiy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,

כִּ֭י בְּחַלּ֣וֹן בֵּיתִ֑י בְּעַ֖ד אֶשְׁנַבִּ֣י נִשְׁקָֽפְתִּי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'e֤re bapּeta'yi֗m 'a֘bi֤ynah babּani֗ym na֣'ar chasar-leֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

וָאֵ֤רֶא בַפְּתָאיִ֗ם אָ֘בִ֤ינָה בַבָּנִ֗ים נַ֣עַר חֲסַר־לֵֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): obe֣r bּa֭shshּuq 'e֣tzel pּinּa֑hּ vede֖reke bּeyta֣hּ yitze'aֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

עֹבֵ֣ר בַּ֭שּׁוּק אֵ֣צֶל פִּנָּ֑הּ וְדֶ֖רֶךְ בֵּיתָ֣הּ יִצְעָֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּeneֽshshep-bּe'e֥reb y֑om bּe'iyshsh֥on la֝֗yelah va'apelaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:

בְּנֶֽשֶׁף־בְּעֶ֥רֶב י֑וֹם בְּאִישׁ֥וֹן לַ֝֗יְלָה וַאֲפֵלָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֣h 'i֭shshּah liqera't֑o shshi֥yt z֝ona֗h unetzu֥rat leֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.

וְהִנֵּ֣ה אִ֭שָּׁה לִקְרָאת֑וֹ שִׁ֥ית ז֝וֹנָ֗ה וּנְצֻ֥רַת לֵֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): homiyּa֣h hi֣y vesora֑ret bּe֝beyta֗hּ lo'-yishshekּen֥u rageleֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:

הֹמִיָּ֣ה הִ֣יא וְסֹרָ֑רֶת בְּ֝בֵיתָ֗הּ לֹא־יִשְׁכְּנ֥וּ רַגְלֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּa֤'am ׀ bּach֗utz pּa֥'am bּarechob֑ot ve'e֖tzel kּal-pּinּa֣h te'eroֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now she is without, now in the streets, and lies in wait at every corner.)

פַּ֤עַם ׀ בַּח֗וּץ פַּ֥עַם בָּרְחֹב֑וֹת וְאֵ֖צֶל כָּל־פִּנָּ֣ה תֶאֱרֹֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehechezi֣yqah bּ֭o vena֣shsheqah-lּ֑o he'e֥zah pa֝ne֗yha vatּo֣'mar lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him,

וְהֶחֱזִ֣יקָה בּ֭וֹ וְנָ֣שְׁקָה־לּ֑וֹ הֵעֵ֥זָה פָ֝נֶ֗יהָ וַתֹּ֣אמַר לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): zibeche֣y shshelami֣ym 'ala֑y ha֝yּ֗om shshilּa֥metּiy nedaraֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"I have peace offerings with me; this day have I paid my vows.

זִבְחֵ֣י שְׁלָמִ֣ים עָלָ֑י הַ֝יּ֗וֹם שִׁלַּ֥מְתִּי נְדָרָֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּe֭n yatza֣'tiy liqera'te֑ka leshshache֥r pּa֝ne֗yka va'emetza'eֽkּa׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore came I forth to meet you, diligently to seek your face, and I have found you.

עַל־כֵּ֭ן יָצָ֣אתִי לִקְרָאתֶ֑ךָ לְשַׁחֵ֥ר פָּ֝נֶ֗יךָ וָאֶמְצָאֶֽךָּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ma֭rebadּiym raba֣detּiy 'areshsi֑y cha֝tub֗ot 'et֥un mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.

מַ֭רְבַדִּים רָבַ֣דְתִּי עַרְשִׂ֑י חֲ֝טֻב֗וֹת אֵט֥וּן מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): na֥petּiy mishshekּabi֑y mo֥r 'a֝hali֗ym veqinּamֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

נַ֥פְתִּי מִשְׁכָּבִ֑י מֹ֥ר אֲ֝הָלִ֗ים וְקִנָּמֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): leka֤h nireve֣h do֭diym 'ad-habּo֑qer ni֝te'alּesa֗h bּa'ohabiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.

לְכָ֤ה נִרְוֶ֣ה דֹ֭דִים עַד־הַבֹּ֑קֶר נִ֝תְעַלְּסָ֗ה בָּאֳהָבִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y 'e֣yn ha'i֣yshsh bּebeyt֑o ha֝la֗ke bּede֣reke merachֽoq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:

כִּ֤י אֵ֣ין הָאִ֣ישׁ בְּבֵית֑וֹ הָ֝לַ֗ךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ מֵרָחֽוֹק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tzeֽror-ha֭kּesep laqa֣ch bּeyad֑o ley֥om ha֝kּe֗se yabo֥ beytֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He has taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed."

צְֽרוֹר־הַ֭כֶּסֶף לָקַ֣ח בְּיָד֑וֹ לְי֥וֹם הַ֝כֵּ֗סֶא יָבֹ֥א בֵיתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hi֭tּatּu bּero֣b liqecha֑hּ bּeche֥leq shse֝pate֗yha tּadּiycheֽnּu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

הִ֭טַּתּוּ בְּרֹ֣ב לִקְחָ֑הּ בְּחֵ֥לֶק שְׂ֝פָתֶ֗יהָ תַּדִּיחֶֽנּוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): h֤ole֥ke 'achare֗yha pּi֫te'o֥m kּe֭shshor 'el-ta֣bach yab֑o u֝ke'e֗kes 'el-musa֥r 'evֽiyl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He goes after her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

ה֤וֹלֵ֥ךְ אַחֲרֶ֗יהָ פִּ֫תְאֹ֥ם כְּ֭שׁוֹר אֶל־טָ֣בַח יָב֑וֹא וּ֝כְעֶ֗כֶס אֶל־מוּסַ֥ר אֱוִֽיל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֤d yepalּa֪ch che֡tz kּeֽbed֗o kּemahe֣r tzipּ֣or 'el-pּa֑ch veloֽ'-ya֝da֗ kּiֽy-benapeshsh֥o hֽu'׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hastens to the snare, and knows not that it is for his life.

עַ֤ד יְפַלַּ֪ח חֵ֡ץ כְּֽבֵד֗וֹ כְּמַהֵ֣ר צִפּ֣וֹר אֶל־פָּ֑ח וְלֹֽא־יָ֝דַ֗ע כִּֽי־בְנַפְשׁ֥וֹ הֽוּא׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h ba֭niym shshime'u-li֑y ve֝haqeshshi֗ybu le'imerey-piֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hear me now therefore, O you children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

וְעַתָּ֣ה בָ֭נִים שִׁמְעוּ־לִ֑י וְ֝הַקְשִׁ֗יבוּ לְאִמְרֵי־פִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-ye֣shsete 'el-dּerake֣yha libּe֑ka 'al-tּe֝ta bּinetiyboteֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Let not your heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

אַל־יֵ֣שְׂטְ אֶל־דְּרָכֶ֣יהָ לִבֶּ֑ךָ אַל־תֵּ֝תַע בִּנְתִיבוֹתֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-rabּi֣ym chalali֣ym hipּi֑ylah va֝'atzumi֗ym kּal-harugeֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For she has cast down many wounded: yes, many strong men have been slain by her.

כִּֽי־רַבִּ֣ים חֲלָלִ֣ים הִפִּ֑ילָה וַ֝עֲצֻמִ֗ים כָּל־הֲרֻגֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּareke֣y shshe'֣ol bּeyta֑hּ yo֝red֗ot 'el-chaderey-maֽvet׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

דַּרְכֵ֣י שְׁא֣וֹל בֵּיתָ֑הּ יֹ֝רְד֗וֹת אֶל־חַדְרֵי־מָֽוֶת׃פ
