Chapter 49
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): lamenatzּe֬cha ׀ libeney-qo֬rach mizemֽor׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world,

לַמְנַצֵּ֬חַ ׀ לִבְנֵי־קֹ֬רַח מִזְמֽוֹר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): shshime'u-zo֭'t kּal-haֽ'amּi֑ym ha֝'azi֗ynu kּal-yo֥shshebey chaֽled׃
Edified Edition (EDE)both low and high, rich and poor alike.

שִׁמְעוּ־זֹ֭את כָּל־הָֽעַמִּ֑ים הַ֝אֲזִ֗ינוּ כָּל־יֹ֥שְׁבֵי חָֽלֶד׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-bּene֣y 'a֭dam gּam-bּeney-'i֑yshsh ya֝֗chad 'ashshi֥yr ve'ebeyֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give understanding.

גַּם־בְּנֵ֣י אָ֭דָם גַּם־בְּנֵי־אִ֑ישׁ יַ֝֗חַד עָשִׁ֥יר וְאֶבְיֽוֹן׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): pּi֭y yedabּe֣r chakem֑ot vehag֖ut libּi֣y tebunֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will turn my ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound my riddle:

פִּ֭י יְדַבֵּ֣ר חָכְמ֑וֹת וְהָג֖וּת לִבִּ֣י תְבוּנֽוֹת׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): atּe֣h lemashsha֣l 'azeni֑y 'epetּa֥ch bּe֝kinּ֗or chiydatֽiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me,

אַטֶּ֣ה לְמָשָׁ֣ל אָזְנִ֑י אֶפְתַּ֥ח בְּ֝כִנּ֗וֹר חִידָתִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): la֣mּah 'i֭yra bּi֣ymey ra֑ 'avo֖n 'aqeba֣y yesubּeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?

לָ֣מָּה אִ֭ירָא בִּ֣ימֵי רָ֑ע עֲוֺ֖ן עֲקֵבַ֣י יְסוּבֵּֽנִי׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): habּotechi֥ym 'al-cheyla֑m ubero֥b 'a֝shshera֗m yitehalּaֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him,

הַבֹּטְחִ֥ים עַל־חֵילָ֑ם וּבְרֹ֥ב עָ֝שְׁרָ֗ם יִתְהַלָּֽלוּ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֗ch lo'-pado֣h yipedּe֣h 'i֑yshsh lo'-yitּe֖n le'lohi֣ym kּaperֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough,

אָ֗ח לֹא־פָדֹ֣ה יִפְדֶּ֣ה אִ֑ישׁ לֹא־יִתֵּ֖ן לֵאלֹהִ֣ים כָּפְרֽוֹ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֭yeqar pּidey֥on napeshsha֗m vechada֥l le'olaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)so that they should live on for ever and not see decay.

וְ֭יֵקַר פִּדְי֥וֹן נַפְשָׁ֗ם וְחָדַ֥ל לְעוֹלָֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): viֽychiy-'֥od lane֑tzach lo֖ yire'e֣h hashshּaֽchat׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others.

וִֽיחִי־ע֥וֹד לָנֶ֑צַח לֹ֖א יִרְאֶ֣ה הַשָּֽׁחַת׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y yire'e֨h ׀ chaka֘mi֤ym yam֗utu ya֤chad kּesi֣yl vaba֣'ar yo'be֑du ve'azeb֖u la'acheri֣ym cheylaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Their tombs will remain their houses for ever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves.

כִּ֤י יִרְאֶ֨ה ׀ חֲכָ֘מִ֤ים יָמ֗וּתוּ יַ֤חַד כְּסִ֣יל וָבַ֣עַר יֹאבֵ֑דוּ וְעָזְב֖וּ לַאֲחֵרִ֣ים חֵילָֽם׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): qirebּa֤m bּatּe֨ymo ׀ leֽ'ola֗m mi֭shshekּenotam ledo֣r vado֑r qaֽre'֥u bi֝shshemota֗m 'ale֣y 'adamֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But man in his pomp does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.

קִרְבָּ֤ם בָּתֵּ֨ימוֹ ׀ לְֽעוֹלָ֗ם מִ֭שְׁכְּנֹתָם לְדֹ֣ר וָדֹ֑ר קָֽרְא֥וּ בִ֝שְׁמוֹתָ֗ם עֲלֵ֣י אֲדָמֽוֹת׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ada֣m bּi֭yqar bּal-yali֑yn nimeshsha֖l kּabּehem֣ot nidemֽu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. Selah.

וְאָדָ֣ם בִּ֭יקָר בַּל־יָלִ֑ין נִמְשַׁ֖ל כַּבְּהֵמ֣וֹת נִדְמֽוּ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ze֣h da֭rekּam kּe֣sel la֑mo ve'achareyhe֓m ׀ bּepiyhe֖m yiretz֣u seֽlah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They are like sheep and are destined for the grave; death will be their shepherd. The upright will rule over them in the morning; their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions.

זֶ֣ה דַ֭רְכָּם כֵּ֣סֶל לָ֑מוֹ וְאַחֲרֵיהֶ֓ם ׀ בְּפִיהֶ֖ם יִרְצ֣וּ סֶֽלָה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּatzּo֤'n ׀ liֽshshe'֣ol shshatּu֮ ma֤vet yi֫re'e֥m vayּiredּ֘u ba֤m yeshshari֨ym ׀ labּo֗qer vtzyrm ve֭tzuram lebalּ֥ot shshe'֗ol mizּebu֥l lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah.

כַּצֹּ֤אן ׀ לִֽשְׁא֣וֹל שַׁתּוּ֮ מָ֤וֶת יִ֫רְעֵ֥ם וַיִּרְדּ֘וּ בָ֤ם יְשָׁרִ֨ים ׀ לַבֹּ֗קֶר וצירם וְ֭צוּרָם לְבַלּ֥וֹת שְׁא֗וֹל מִזְּבֻ֥ל לֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ake-'elohi֗ym yipedּe֣h na֭peshshiy miֽyּad-shshe'֑ol kּi֖y yiqּache֣niy seֽlah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendour of their houses increases;

אַךְ־אֱלֹהִ֗ים יִפְדֶּ֣ה נַ֭פְשִׁי מִֽיַּד־שְׁא֑וֹל כִּ֖י יִקָּחֵ֣נִי סֶֽלָה׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּi֭yra kּiֽy-ya'ashshi֣r 'i֑yshsh kּiֽy-yi֝rebּeh kּeb֣od bּeytֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendour will not descend with them.

אַל־תִּ֭ירָא כִּֽי־יַעֲשִׁ֣ר אִ֑ישׁ כִּֽי־יִ֝רְבֶּה כְּב֣וֹד בֵּיתֽוֹ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y lo֣ be֭moto yiqּa֣ch hakּo֑l lo'-yere֖d 'achara֣yv kּebodֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Though while they lived they counted themselves blessed, and people praise you when you prosper,

כִּ֤י לֹ֣א בְ֭מוֹתוֹ יִקַּ֣ח הַכֹּ֑ל לֹא־יֵרֵ֖ד אַחֲרָ֣יו כְּבוֹדֽוֹ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-na֭peshsho bּechayּa֣yv yebare֑ke ve֝yodu֗ka kּiy-teyti֥yb laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)they will join the generation of their ancestors, who will never again see the light of life.

כִּֽי־נַ֭פְשׁוֹ בְּחַיָּ֣יו יְבָרֵ֑ךְ וְ֝יוֹדֻ֗ךָ כִּי־תֵיטִ֥יב לָֽךְ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): tּa֭bo 'ad-dּ֣or 'abota֑yv 'ad-ne֝֗tzach lo֣ yire'u-'ֽor׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A man who has riches but lacks understanding is like the beasts that perish.

תָּ֭בוֹא עַד־דּ֣וֹר אֲבוֹתָ֑יו עַד־נֵ֝֗צַח לֹ֣א יִרְאוּ־אֽוֹר׃

21

אָדָ֣ם בִּ֭יקָר וְלֹ֣א יָבִ֑ין נִמְשַׁ֖ל כַּבְּהֵמ֣וֹת נִדְמֽוּ׃
