Chapter 3
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֥'mer la֖hּ na'omi֣y chamota֑hּ bּitּi֞y halo֧ 'abaqּeshsh-la֛ke man֖ocha 'ashshe֥r yiֽytab-laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, "My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for.

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר לָ֖הּ נָעֳמִ֣י חֲמוֹתָ֑הּ בִּתִּ֞י הֲלֹ֧א אֲבַקֶּשׁ־לָ֛ךְ מָנ֖וֹחַ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִֽיטַב־לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h halo֥ bo֨'az֙ moֽda'etּa֔nu 'ashshe֥r hayi֖yt 'et-na'arota֑yv hinּeh-h֗u zore֛h 'et-gּo֥ren hashsּe'ori֖ym halּaֽyelah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Boaz, with whose women you have been working, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing-floor.

וְעַתָּ֗ה הֲלֹ֥א בֹ֨עַז֙ מֹֽדַעְתָּ֔נוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיִ֖ית אֶת־נַעֲרוֹתָ֑יו הִנֵּה־ה֗וּא זֹרֶ֛ה אֶת־גֹּ֥רֶן הַשְּׂעֹרִ֖ים הַלָּֽיְלָה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): veracha֣tzetּe ׀ vasa֗ketּe veshsa֧metּe shmltk shsimelota֛yike 'ala֖yike vyrdty veyara֣detּe hagּo֑ren 'al-tּiuade'i֣y la'i֔yshsh 'a֥d kּalּot֖o le'eko֥l velishshetּֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing-floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.

וְרָחַ֣צְתְּ ׀ וָסַ֗כְתְּ וְשַׂ֧מְתְּ שמלתך שִׂמְלֹתַ֛יִךְ עָלַ֖יִךְ וירדתי וְיָרַ֣דְתְּ הַגֹּ֑רֶן אַל־תִּוָּדְעִ֣י לָאִ֔ישׁ עַ֥ד כַּלֹּת֖וֹ לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וְלִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): viyhi֣y beshshakeb֗o veyada֨'atּe֙ 'et-hamּaqom֙ 'ashshe֣r yishshekּab-shsha֔m uba֛'t vegilּi֥yt maregּelota֖yv vshkbty veshshaka֑betּe vehu'֙ yagּi֣yd la֔ke 'e֖t 'ashshe֥r tּa'ashsiֽyn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do."

וִיהִ֣י בְשָׁכְב֗וֹ וְיָדַ֨עַתְּ֙ אֶת־הַמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִשְׁכַּב־שָׁ֔ם וּבָ֛את וְגִלִּ֥ית מַרְגְּלֹתָ֖יו ושכבתי וְשָׁכָ֑בְתְּ וְהוּא֙ יַגִּ֣יד לָ֔ךְ אֵ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעַשִֽׂין׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֖'mer 'ele֑yha kּo֛l 'ashsher-tּo'meri֥y 'ela֖y 'eֽ'eshseֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"I will do whatever you say," Ruth answered.

וַתֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלֶ֑יהָ כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־תֹּאמְרִ֥י אֵלַ֖י אֶֽעֱשֶֽׂה׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֖red hagּo֑ren vatּa֕'ashs kּeko֥l 'ashsher-tziua֖tּah chamotaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So she went down to the threshing-floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do.

וַתֵּ֖רֶד הַגֹּ֑רֶן וַתַּ֕עַשׂ כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוַּ֖תָּה חֲמוֹתָֽהּ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'kal bּo֤'az vayּeshshetּe֙ vayּiyta֣b libּ֔o vayּabo֕ lishshekּa֖b bּiqetze֣h ha'arema֑h vatּabo֣ balּa֔t vatּega֥l maregּelota֖yv vatּishshekּaֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down.

וַיֹּ֨אכַל בֹּ֤עַז וַיֵּשְׁתְּ֙ וַיִּיטַ֣ב לִבּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֕א לִשְׁכַּ֖ב בִּקְצֵ֣ה הָעֲרֵמָ֑ה וַתָּבֹ֣א בַלָּ֔ט וַתְּגַ֥ל מַרְגְּלֹתָ֖יו וַתִּשְׁכָּֽב׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ bּachatzi֣y halּa֔yelah vayּechera֥d ha'i֖yshsh vayּilּape֑t vehinּe֣h 'ishshּa֔h shshoke֖bet maregּelotaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In the middle of the night something startled the man; he turned and there was a woman lying at his feet!

וַיְהִי֙ בַּחֲצִ֣י הַלַּ֔יְלָה וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד הָאִ֖ישׁ וַיִּלָּפֵ֑ת וְהִנֵּ֣ה אִשָּׁ֔ה שֹׁכֶ֖בֶת מַרְגְּלֹתָֽיו׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer miy-'a֑tּ vatּo֗'mer 'anokiy֙ r֣ut 'amate֔ka uparashsetּa֤ kenape֨ka֙ 'al-'ama֣teka֔ kּi֥y go'e֖l 'aֽtּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Who are you?" he asked. "I am your servant Ruth," she said. "spread the corner of your garment over me [1], since you are a kinsman-redeemer of our family."

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מִי־אָ֑תּ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אָנֹכִי֙ ר֣וּת אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וּפָרַשְׂתָּ֤ כְנָפֶ֨ךָ֙ עַל־אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ כִּ֥י גֹאֵ֖ל אָֽתָּה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer bּeruka֨h 'a֤tּe laֽyhvah֙ bּitּi֔y heyta֛betּe chasedּe֥ke ha'achar֖on min-hari'shsh֑on lebiletּiy-le֗ket 'acharey֙ habּa֣churi֔ym 'im-dּa֖l ve'im-'ashshiֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"The LORD bless you, my daughter," he replied. "This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר בְּרוּכָ֨ה אַ֤תְּ לַֽיהוָה֙ בִּתִּ֔י הֵיטַ֛בְתְּ חַסְדֵּ֥ךְ הָאַחֲר֖וֹן מִן־הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן לְבִלְתִּי־לֶ֗כֶת אַחֲרֵי֙ הַבַּ֣חוּרִ֔ים אִם־דַּ֖ל וְאִם־עָשִֽׁיר׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h bּitּiy֙ 'al-tּi֣yre'i֔y kּo֥l 'ashsher-tּo'meri֖y 'eֽ'eshseh-lּa֑ke kּi֤y yode֨'a֙ kּal-shsha֣'ar 'amּi֔y kּi֛y 'e֥shshet cha֖yil 'aֽtּe׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character.

וְעַתָּ֗ה בִּתִּי֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־תֹּאמְרִ֖י אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לָּ֑ךְ כִּ֤י יוֹדֵ֨עַ֙ כָּל־שַׁ֣עַר עַמִּ֔י כִּ֛י אֵ֥שֶׁת חַ֖יִל אָֽתְּ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ kּi֣y 'amena֔m kּi֥y 'm go'e֖l 'ano֑kiy vega֛m ye֥shsh gּo'e֖l qar֥ob mimּeֽnּiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Although it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer of our family, there is another who is a closer relative than I.

וְעַתָּה֙ כִּ֣י אָמְנָ֔ם כִּ֥י אם גֹאֵ֖ל אָנֹ֑כִי וְגַ֛ם יֵ֥שׁ גֹּאֵ֖ל קָר֥וֹב מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): li֣yniy ׀ halּa֗yelah vehaya֤h babּo֨qer֙ 'im-yige'ale֥ke tob֙ yige'a֔l ve'im-lo֨ yachepּo֧tz legaֽ'ole֛ke uge'aletּi֥yke 'ano֖kiy chay-yehva֑h shshikebi֖y 'ad-habּoֽqer׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-redeemer, good; let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the LORD lives I will do it. Lie here until morning."

לִ֣ינִי ׀ הַלַּ֗יְלָה וְהָיָ֤ה בַבֹּ֨קֶר֙ אִם־יִגְאָלֵ֥ךְ טוֹב֙ יִגְאָ֔ל וְאִם־לֹ֨א יַחְפֹּ֧ץ לְגָֽאֳלֵ֛ךְ וּגְאַלְתִּ֥יךְ אָנֹ֖כִי חַי־יְהוָ֑ה שִׁכְבִ֖י עַד־הַבֹּֽקֶר׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּishshekּa֤b mrgltv maregּelotayo֙ 'ad-habּo֔qer vatּa֕qam btrvm bּete֛rem yakּi֥yr 'i֖yshsh 'et-re'e֑hu vayּo֨'mer֙ 'al-yiuada֔ kּiy-ba֥'ah ha'ishshּa֖h hagּoֽren׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before anyone could be recognised; and he said, "No one must know that a woman came to the threshing-floor."

וַתִּשְׁכַּ֤ב מרגלתו מַרְגְּלוֹתָיוֹ֙ עַד־הַבֹּ֔קֶר וַתָּ֕קָם בטרום בְּטֶ֛רֶם יַכִּ֥יר אִ֖ישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַל־יִוָּדַ֔ע כִּי־בָ֥אָה הָאִשָּׁ֖ה הַגֹּֽרֶן׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer ha֠biy hamּitepּa֧chat 'ashsher-'ala֛yike ve'eֽchoziy-ba֖hּ vatּo֣'chez bּa֑hּ vayּa֤mad shsheshsh-shse'oriym֙ vayּa֣shshet 'ale֔yha vayּabo֖ ha'iֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He also said, "Bring me the shawl you are wearing and hold it out." When she did so, he poured into it six measures of barley and placed the bundle on her. Then he went back to town.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הָ֠בִי הַמִּטְפַּ֧חַת אֲשֶׁר־עָלַ֛יִךְ וְאֶֽחֳזִי־בָ֖הּ וַתֹּ֣אחֶז בָּ֑הּ וַיָּ֤מָד שֵׁשׁ־שְׂעֹרִים֙ וַיָּ֣שֶׁת עָלֶ֔יהָ וַיָּבֹ֖א הָעִֽיר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּabo'֙ 'el-chamota֔hּ vatּo֖'mer miy-'a֣tּe bּitּi֑y vatּa֨gּed-la֔hּ 'e֛t kּal-'ashshe֥r 'aֽshsah-la֖hּ ha'iֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, "How did it go, my daughter?" Then she told her everything Boaz had done for her

וַתָּבוֹא֙ אֶל־חֲמוֹתָ֔הּ וַתֹּ֖אמֶר מִי־אַ֣תְּ בִּתִּ֑י וַתַּ֨גֶּד־לָ֔הּ אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָֽשָׂה־לָ֖הּ הָאִֽישׁ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֕'mer shsheshsh-hashsּe'ori֥ym ha'e֖lּeh na֣tan li֑y kּi֚y 'ama֣r 'ela֔y 'al-tּab֥o'iy reyqa֖m 'el-chamoteֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and added, "He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, 'Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.'"

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר שֵׁשׁ־הַשְּׂעֹרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה נָ֣תַן לִ֑י כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר אֵלַ֔י אַל־תָּב֥וֹאִי רֵיקָ֖ם אֶל־חֲמוֹתֵֽךְ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ shshebi֣y bitּi֔y 'a֚d 'ashshe֣r tּeֽde'i֔yn 'e֖yke yipּo֣l dּaba֑r kּi֣y lo֤ yishsheqot֙ ha'i֔yshsh kּiֽy-'im-kּilּa֥h hadּaba֖r hayּֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Naomi said, "Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today."

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ שְׁבִ֣י בִתִּ֔י עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּֽדְעִ֔ין אֵ֖יךְ יִפֹּ֣ל דָּבָ֑ר כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יִשְׁקֹט֙ הָאִ֔ישׁ כִּֽי־אִם־כִּלָּ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר הַיּֽוֹם׃
