Chapter 4

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubo֨'az 'ala֣h hashshּa'ar֮ vayּe֣shsheb shsham֒ vehinּe֨h hagּo'e֤l 'ober֙ 'ashshe֣r dּibּer-bּo֔'az vayּo֛'mer s֥urah shshebah-pּo֖h pּeloni֣y 'alemoni֑y vayּa֖sar vayּeshsheֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Meanwhile Boaz went up to the city gate and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer he had mentioned came along. Boaz said, "Come over here, my friend, and sit down." So he went over and sat down.

וּבֹ֨עַז עָלָ֣ה הַשַּׁעַר֮ וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב שָׁם֒ וְהִנֵּ֨ה הַגֹּאֵ֤ל עֹבֵר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּר־בֹּ֔עַז וַיֹּ֛אמֶר ס֥וּרָה שְׁבָה־פֹּ֖ה פְּלֹנִ֣י אַלְמֹנִ֑י וַיָּ֖סַר וַיֵּשֵֽׁב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֞ch 'ashsara֧h 'anashshi֛ym mizּiqene֥y ha'i֖yr vayּo֣'mer shshebu-po֑h vayּeshsheֽbu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, "Sit here," and they did so.

וַיִּקַּ֞ח עֲשָׂרָ֧ה אֲנָשִׁ֛ים מִזִּקְנֵ֥י הָעִ֖יר וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁבוּ־פֹ֑ה וַיֵּשֵֽׁבוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ lagּo'e֔l cheleqat֙ hashsּade֔h 'ashshe֥r le'achi֖ynu le'eliyme֑leke makera֣h na'omi֔y hashshּa֖bah mishsּede֥h mo'aֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, "Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לַגֹּאֵ֔ל חֶלְקַת֙ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְאָחִ֖ינוּ לֶאֱלִימֶ֑לֶךְ מָכְרָ֣ה נָעֳמִ֔י הַשָּׁ֖בָה מִשְּׂדֵ֥ה מוֹאָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ani֨y 'ama֜retּiy 'egele֧h 'azeneka֣ le'mo֗r qe֠neh ne֥ged haֽyּoshshebiym֮ vene֣ged ziqene֣y 'amּiy֒ 'im-tּige'al֙ gּe'a֔l ve'im-lo֨ yige'a֜l hagּi֣ydah lּi֗y v'd ve'eֽde'ah֙ kּi֣y 'e֤yn zulaֽteka֙ lige'֔ol ve'anoki֖y 'achare֑yka vayּo֖'mer 'anoki֥y 'ege'aֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it before you, and I am next in line." "I will redeem it," he said.

וַאֲנִ֨י אָמַ֜רְתִּי אֶגְלֶ֧ה אָזְנְךָ֣ לֵאמֹ֗ר קְ֠נֵה נֶ֥גֶד הַֽיֹּשְׁבִים֮ וְנֶ֣גֶד זִקְנֵ֣י עַמִּי֒ אִם־תִּגְאַל֙ גְּאָ֔ל וְאִם־לֹ֨א יִגְאַ֜ל הַגִּ֣ידָה לִּ֗י ואדע וְאֵֽדְעָה֙ כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין זוּלָֽתְךָ֙ לִגְא֔וֹל וְאָנֹכִ֖י אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אָנֹכִ֥י אֶגְאָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer bּo֔'az bּeyom-qenoteka֥ hashsּade֖h miyּa֣d na'omi֑y u֠me'et r֣ut hamּo'abiyּa֤h 'eֽshshet-hamּet֙ qnyty qani֔ytah lehaqi֥ym shshem-hamּe֖t 'al-nachalatֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his inheritance."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בֹּ֔עַז בְּיוֹם־קְנוֹתְךָ֥ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה מִיַּ֣ד נָעֳמִ֑י וּ֠מֵאֵת ר֣וּת הַמּוֹאֲבִיָּ֤ה אֵֽשֶׁת־הַמֵּת֙ קניתי קָנִ֔יתָה לְהָקִ֥ים שֵׁם־הַמֵּ֖ת עַל־נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer hagּo'e֗l lo֤ 'ukal֙ lg'vl lige'al-li֔y pּen-'ashshechi֖yt 'et-nachalati֑y gּe'al-leka֤ 'atּah֙ 'et-gּe'ulּati֔y kּi֥y lo'-'uka֖l lige'oֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At this, the guardian-redeemer said, "Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own inheritance. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַגֹּאֵ֗ל לֹ֤א אוּכַל֙ לגאול לִגְאָל־לִ֔י פֶּן־אַשְׁחִ֖ית אֶת־נַחֲלָתִ֑י גְּאַל־לְךָ֤ אַתָּה֙ אֶת־גְּאֻלָּתִ֔י כִּ֥י לֹא־אוּכַ֖ל לִגְאֹֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vezo't֩ lepani֨ym bּeyishsera'e֜l 'al-hagּe'ulּa֤h ve'al-hatּemurah֙ leqayּe֣m kּal-dּaba֔r shshala֥p 'i֛yshsh na'al֖o venata֣n lere'e֑hu vezo֥'t hatּe'uda֖h bּeyishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)(Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal [1] and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalising transactions in Israel.)

וְזֹאת֩ לְפָנִ֨ים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל עַל־הַגְּאוּלָּ֤ה וְעַל־הַתְּמוּרָה֙ לְקַיֵּ֣ם כָּל־דָּבָ֔ר שָׁלַ֥ף אִ֛ישׁ נַעֲל֖וֹ וְנָתַ֣ן לְרֵעֵ֑הוּ וְזֹ֥את הַתְּעוּדָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer hagּo'e֛l lebo֖'az qeneh-la֑ke vayּishshelo֖p na'alֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, "Buy it yourself." And he removed his sandal.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר הַגֹּאֵ֛ל לְבֹ֖עַז קְנֵה־לָ֑ךְ וַיִּשְׁלֹ֖ף נַעֲלֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֩ bּo֨'az lazּeqeni֜ym vekal-ha'a֗m 'edi֤ym 'atּem֙ hayּ֔om kּi֤y qani֨ytiy֙ 'et-kּal-'ashshe֣r leֽ'eliyme֔leke ve'e֛t kּal-'ashshe֥r lekiley֖on umachel֑on miyּa֖d na'omiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, "Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon.

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ בֹּ֨עַז לַזְּקֵנִ֜ים וְכָל־הָעָ֗ם עֵדִ֤ים אַתֶּם֙ הַיּ֔וֹם כִּ֤י קָנִ֨יתִי֙ אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֶֽאֱלִימֶ֔לֶךְ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְכִלְי֖וֹן וּמַחְל֑וֹן מִיַּ֖ד נָעֳמִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vega֣m 'et-r֣ut hamּo'abiyּah֩ 'e֨shshet machel֜on qani֧ytiy li֣y le'ishshּa֗h lehaqi֤ym shshem-hamּet֙ 'al-na֣chalat֔o velo'-yikּare֧t shshem-hamּe֛t me'i֥m 'echa֖yv umishshּa֣'ar meqom֑o 'edi֥ym 'atּe֖m hayּֽom׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his native town. Today you are witnesses!"

וְגַ֣ם אֶת־ר֣וּת הַמֹּאֲבִיָּה֩ אֵ֨שֶׁת מַחְל֜וֹן קָנִ֧יתִי לִ֣י לְאִשָּׁ֗ה לְהָקִ֤ים שֵׁם־הַמֵּת֙ עַל־נַ֣חֲלָת֔וֹ וְלֹא־יִכָּרֵ֧ת שֵׁם־הַמֵּ֛ת מֵעִ֥ם אֶחָ֖יו וּמִשַּׁ֣עַר מְקוֹמ֑וֹ עֵדִ֥ים אַתֶּ֖ם הַיּֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֜u kּal-ha'a֧m 'ashsher-bּashshּa֛'ar vehazּeqeni֖ym 'edi֑ym yitּen֩ yehva֨h 'eֽt-ha'ishshּa֜h habּa'a֣h 'el-bּeyte֗ka kּerache֤l ׀ ukele'ah֙ 'ashshe֨r bּan֤u shshetּeyhem֙ 'et-bּe֣yt yishsera'e֔l va'ashseh-cha֣yil bּe'epera֔tah uqera'-shshe֖m bּebe֥yt laֽchem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, "We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ כָּל־הָעָ֧ם אֲשֶׁר־בַּשַּׁ֛עַר וְהַזְּקֵנִ֖ים עֵדִ֑ים יִתֵּן֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֶֽת־הָאִשָּׁ֜ה הַבָּאָ֣ה אֶל־בֵּיתֶ֗ךָ כְּרָחֵ֤ל ׀ וּכְלֵאָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּנ֤וּ שְׁתֵּיהֶם֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַעֲשֵׂה־חַ֣יִל בְּאֶפְרָ֔תָה וּקְרָא־שֵׁ֖ם בְּבֵ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): viyhi֤y beֽyteka֙ kּebe֣yt pּe֔retz 'ashsher-yaleda֥h tama֖r liֽyhuda֑h min-hazּe֗ra 'ashshe֨r yitּe֤n yehvah֙ leka֔ min-haֽnּa'ara֖h hazּoֽ't׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah."

וִיהִ֤י בֵֽיתְךָ֙ כְּבֵ֣ית פֶּ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־יָלְדָ֥ה תָמָ֖ר לִֽיהוּדָ֑ה מִן־הַזֶּ֗רַע אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִתֵּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ לְךָ֔ מִן־הַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch bּo֤'az 'et-rut֙ vatּehiy-l֣o le'ishshּa֔h vayּabo֖ 'ele֑yha vayּitּe֨n yehva֥h la֛hּ heray֖on vatּe֥led bּeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח בֹּ֤עַז אֶת־רוּת֙ וַתְּהִי־ל֣וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֖א אֵלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן יְהוָ֥ה לָ֛הּ הֵרָי֖וֹן וַתֵּ֥לֶד בֵּֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo'ma֤renah hanּashshiym֙ 'eֽl-na'omi֔y bּar֣uke yehva֔h 'a֠shsher lo֣ hishshebּi֥yt la֛ke gּo'e֖l hayּ֑om veyiqּare֥ shshem֖o bּeyishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The women said to Naomi: "Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel!

וַתֹּאמַ֤רְנָה הַנָּשִׁים֙ אֶֽל־נָעֳמִ֔י בָּר֣וּךְ יְהוָ֔ה אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹ֣א הִשְׁבִּ֥ית לָ֛ךְ גֹּאֵ֖ל הַיּ֑וֹם וְיִקָּרֵ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veha֤yah lake֙ lemeshshi֣yb ne֔peshsh ulekalekּe֖l 'et-shseybate֑ke kּi֣y kalּate֤ke 'aֽshsher-'aheba֨teke֙ yelada֔tּu 'ashsher-hiy'֙ t֣obah la֔ke mishshּibe'a֖h bּaniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth."

וְהָ֤יָה לָךְ֙ לְמֵשִׁ֣יב נֶ֔פֶשׁ וּלְכַלְכֵּ֖ל אֶת־שֵׂיבָתֵ֑ךְ כִּ֣י כַלָּתֵ֤ךְ אֲֽשֶׁר־אֲהֵבַ֨תֶךְ֙ יְלָדַ֔תּוּ אֲשֶׁר־הִיא֙ ט֣וֹבָה לָ֔ךְ מִשִּׁבְעָ֖ה בָּנִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqּa֨ch na'omi֤y 'et-hayּe֨led֙ vatּeshshite֣hu becheyqa֔hּ vatּehiy-l֖o le'omeֽnet׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him.

וַתִּקַּ֨ח נָעֳמִ֤י אֶת־הַיֶּ֨לֶד֙ וַתְּשִׁתֵ֣הוּ בְחֵיקָ֔הּ וַתְּהִי־ל֖וֹ לְאֹמֶֽנֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqere'nah֩ l֨o hashshּeken֥ot shshem֙ le'mo֔r yulּad-bּe֖n lena'omi֑y vatּiqere֤'naֽh shshemo֙ 'obe֔d h֥u 'abiy-yishsha֖y 'abi֥y daviֽd׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The women living there said, "Naomi has a son!" and they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

וַתִּקְרֶאנָה֩ ל֨וֹ הַשְּׁכֵנ֥וֹת שֵׁם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יֻלַּד־בֵּ֖ן לְנָעֳמִ֑י וַתִּקְרֶ֤אנָֽה שְׁמוֹ֙ עוֹבֵ֔ד ה֥וּא אֲבִי־יִשַׁ֖י אֲבִ֥י דָוִֽד׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨lּeh֙ tּoled֣ot pּa֔retz pּe֖retz holi֥yd 'et-chetzerֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron,

וְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ תּוֹלְד֣וֹת פָּ֔רֶץ פֶּ֖רֶץ הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־חֶצְרֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vechetzeron֙ holi֣yd 'et-ra֔m vera֖m holi֥yd 'et-'amּiֽynadaֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab,

וְחֶצְרוֹן֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־רָ֔ם וְרָ֖ם הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־עַמִּֽינָדָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'amּiֽynadab֙ holi֣yd 'et-nacheshsh֔on venacheshsh֖on holi֥yd 'et-shsalemaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,

וְעַמִּֽינָדָב֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־נַחְשׁ֔וֹן וְנַחְשׁ֖וֹן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־שַׂלְמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsalemon֙ holi֣yd 'et-bּo֔'az ubo֖'az holi֥yd 'et-'obeֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed,

וְשַׂלְמוֹן֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־בֹּ֔עַז וּבֹ֖עַז הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־עוֹבֵֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'obed֙ holi֣yd 'et-yishsha֔y veyishsha֖y holi֥yd 'et-dּaviֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.

וְעֹבֵד֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יִשָׁ֔י וְיִשַׁ֖י הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־דָּוִֽד׃
